Glarus
Glarnerland, a steep-sided valley in SE Switzerland, is situated between Zürich and the Grisons region.
Canton Glarus is one of the oldest in Switzerland and still keeps the original form of government with it’s ‘Landsgemeinde’. This is when all residents gather together on the first Sunday in May in the main town of Glarus, to discuss laws to be undertaken by the canton’s government.
Dairy products and agriculture are the main industries of Glarnerland. Culinary specialities include local game, ‘Wild’, in the autumn and also the ‘Glarner Pastete’, a light pastry filled with plums or almonds.
Glarnerland lends itself to hiking, mountain trekking and climbing. There are two lakes to enjoy, the Walensee and Klöntalersee. Braunwald is a carfree village and along with Elm, offers sports and relaxation in both summer and winter. Tödi is the highest mountain in Glarnerland at 3612m above sea level.
If mountain climbing is not for you, chairlifts and cabin lifts are available to take you to the pastures above Elm, Schwanden, Braunwald and Kerenzerberg for you to enjoy the spectacular views from a mountain restaurant.
